Session starts Moonblossom 32nd 800av 9:00AM.
- Caitlin and Aerendyl previously arranged to meet an undead arms dealer for 20 daggers (minimum order 40) at 10:30 p.m. that night, north of the city. They also scheduled a meeting with a weapons master named Nighthawk at the Gildwood Crest bar at 7 a.m. in six days to discuss a sword fit for a genie.
- The current in-game time is around 9 a.m. Shain, who was left in his room, had been studying an equation.
- Shain attempts to experiment with the equation and the aether, trying to create a complex contraption. He rolls an Intelligence check of 24.
- His experiment results in him putting a hole in the wall with his Dodecahedron. The innkeeper charges him six gold to cover the damages.
- Shain then tries to use “Momentary Stasis” on the Dodecahedron, which pauses time for six seconds, but it has no significant effect.
- Shain hits the Dodecahedron (unarmed attack, two to hit, one damage). When he hits it, a red stream appears from the impact point and goes into the Dodecahedron’s blue swirling light, causing the light to go away. The DM clarifies this is a story-telling event and won’t happen every time Shain takes damage.
- Shain decides to pour most of his spell slots into the Dodecahedron, leaving one fourth-level spell slot.
- He then attempts a “vibe check” on hitting the Dodecahedron again, rolling a 23 (14 + 9), and the vibe is not feeling great. He taps the Dodecahedron, but there’s no response.
- The DM reminds Shain that his character would know that Trigger (a summoned entity) likely doesn’t originate from inside the Dodecahedron, as Trigger previously appeared via portals nearby, not directly from the item.
- Shain takes a short rest and receives a message from Aerendyl to meet him and Caitlin at the bazaar.
- As Shain, Caitlin, and Aerendyl make their way to the meeting location (the 32nd of the month), they find the streets exceptionally busy with people waiting for an event, not the bazaar itself which is a couple of days away.
- Caitlin asks a half-orc civilian what is happening, and he tells her, “The statue. It’s coming today.” The group recalls the innkeeper previously mentioning the city needed a statue for their democratic voting system; they were supposed to get it the day before the bazaar (the 35th), but it’s arriving early on the 32nd.
- They hear a commotion towards the center of the city. Caitlin picks up Shain to give him a better view. They see the crowd becoming more compact.
- Shain sends his crow familiar to get a closer look. The DM (Dragon) knows that these statues are of the last king (actually the second king) who created the voting system. Citizens touch the statue to learn the issue and cast their vote.
- The crow sees four people in white robes with red accents, surrounded by guards, moving through the crowd. The crowd seems suspicious of these officials.
- While Shain is using his crow, he goes limp on Caitlin’s shoulders. Caitlin attempts to cast Lesser Restoration on Shain to cure the “blindness” and “deafness” associated with using the familiar, but the DM rules it wouldn’t work that way and would just break the connection.
- The four robed figures stop in a main courtyard, form a circle, and raise their arms. A pale blue light beam shoots into the sky, and a statue begins to be carved from the ground itself. The crowd is ecstatic.
- Caitlin wants to determine if the statue is being summoned or teleported. The DM notes it would be difficult to tell from their distance.
- Once the statue is fully formed, a loud bell rings, signaling a new issue to be voted upon. People begin to form a line. Aerendyl does not join the line, feeling it’s not his place as an outsider, even though outsiders are welcome to vote. Caitlin and Shain (still on Caitlin’s shoulder) get in line.
- Shain, through his crow, tries to locate the four robed figures but loses them in the crowd. It is now around 9:30-9:45 a.m.
- After about 15 minutes, they can see the statue: an older man in his late 60s or early 70s, holding a great staff with a single jewel. People are touching the raised base of the statue to vote. Aerendyl recognizes the depiction from history books as King Lemon, the second king of Bon Trend, and the staff as a previously classified national treasure of immense power.
- King Lemon was born Sunfire 22nd, 69 B.V. (Before Vote) and died Moon Dream 32nd, 9 A.V. (After Vote), passing away while activating the statue system.
- Shain notices the four individuals who summoned the statue seem to have disappeared into the crowd.
- As they near the front of the line, Aerendyl touches the statue first. He is presented with the issue: “Should the act of Predatory Debt Collection be removed from legality in the nation of Bon Trend?” Aerendyl votes “Kill all Dark Elves” (which the DM interprets as a “Yes” to removing predatory debt collection from legality).
- Caitlin then asks Aerendyl what the statue is made of. Aerendyl makes an investigation check, aided by Shain (Flash of Genius), for a total of 21. He determines it is made mostly of Adamantine.
- Aerendyl suggests stealing the statue for its valuable material. Shain mentions he could “liquidate” a 10x10 cube of it.
- Shain observes children going up to the statue to vote. He asks a nearby citizen named Derek about it. Derek explains that children’s votes count for one-third of a regular vote and it helps instill patriotic spirit; this has been the norm since the system began.
- Derek mentions the last census showed 40,000 people in Junicara, with children making up about 18% of the population. Shain asks if the magic system is foolproof against rigging; Derek says not to his knowledge.
- The time is now around 10:30 a.m. Aerendyl mentions to Shain his earlier comment about crafting. Aerendyl states he has acquired materials to create devices and wants to test them, suggesting they find a blacksmith.
- Aerendyl wants to rent out a blacksmith’s forge, or even the whole blacksmith shop.
- The group decides to find a blacksmith away from the commotion. Aerendyl attempts to use a spell to make the voting alarm go off, thinking it might disperse the crowd, but it doesn’t work as intended.
- They find a blacksmith shop. Aerendyl puts a sign on the door saying “Rat Infestation, Do Not Enter.” Shain enhances it with Prestidigitation to make it look more real, with a green tint and aura.
- Aerendyl tries to pick the lock. Caitlin expresses disapproval of breaking in.
- A passerby (Toby) notices them. Shain and Aerendyl convince Toby they are mercenaries hired by “Derek” to clear out a rat infestation and that he should give them the key. Toby complies.
- Caitlin is still against entering. Aerendyl, frustrated with Caitlin, says he will go in alone to make his devices. Caitlin refuses to allow him to enter, taking the key.
- Aerendyl and Shain decide to leave Caitlin and go back to the inn, as Aerendyl’s nighttime plans (meeting the undead arms dealer) seem to have “cleared up” due to the disagreement.
- Back at the inn, Aerendyl remembers Boren (the dwarf from the Fingers Discount) and decides to send him a message (25 words limit for Sending spell) asking if he knows a place to use a forge and anvil in Junicara. The reply is that Boren is not currently in Junicara.
- Aerendyl takes out a collection of magical stones he acquired. He sorts them into stones he knows and stones he doesn’t. He uses Detect Magic to identify real ones from fakes.
- Another bell rings, similar to the voting bell, but it doesn’t concern them.
- Aerendyl asks Shain to help identify the unknown stones, particularly a large orange one. They discuss their pasts and motivations.
- Shain uses a “stone of Sending” (presumably a magic item allowing repeated Sending spells) to ask an entity (implied to be related to his Dodecahedron or past) about the stones.
- Orange Stone: “This stone will repeatedly cast the same spell every six seconds. The person who attunes to the stone dedicates the spell. It needs to be next to the Yellow Stone to work.”
- Yellow Stone: “This stone will magically store indefinitely an amount of magical energy. The maximum capacity is dictated by the size of the stone… Exceeding capacity will result in the stone eventually exploding. Recommended use with the Green Stone.” It includes a formula L+S=M (Length + Size = Max Capacity).
- Green Stone: “The Green Stone allows the conversion of physical power to magical spell slot generation. The formula is as follows: Distance traveled in speed (feet) / 30 = spell level slots created.”
- Shain realizes the Green Stone’s properties are similar to his research on the Aether, which mentions high speed could lead to “shallow civilization” and a formula involving distance traveled.
- They deduce they need the Cyan Stone (referring to the Orange Stone’s description which implies a set), Yellow Stone, and Green Stone together for a renewable energy source.
- The DM informs Shain and Aerendyl that their friendship and shared experiences have caused them to level up. Caitlin does not level up.
